The stairs leading to the upper floor
show that the house exhibited some vernacular refinement. Mary Lynn
visited the house one time -- the only time she ever saw her maternal
grandfather. Her grandfather had 3 children, including Mary Lynn's
mother, with beautiful Hallie, his 1st wife who was killed in the car wreck
on the way to church.
He had no children with his 2nd wife, Frances, whom he divorced after a short marriage and 5 children with his 3rd wife, Lizzie, with whom he found peace. Hallie's death was a terrible shock to Grandfather Ashburn. He changed his whole lifestyle after her death - and chose country living over city living. Money, material possessions, social status, etc. obviously became insignificant after her death. |
